THE DEFINITIVE RANKING OF CHRISTMAS MOVIES

It’s the most wonderful time of the year… And what better way to spend the holidays than cosyin’ up ‘n watching the best Christmas movies with the fam. Stuck for inspiration on what to watch this year? We got you… read on for our top picks of festive films!

10. The Holiday

Unlucky in love, two women decide to swap houses in LA and London to get away from it all and have some ‘me-time’ over Christmas. Little do they know how this trip will change both of their lives! This is the perfect romcom, with a real Christmassy feel.

9. Die Hard

A lot of people argue whether this is really a Christmas film, but we’re firmly on the side that it definitely IS. Bruce Willis fighting terrorists is defo a little different from the classic Christmas tale, but that’s what keeps us coming back every year!

8. Miracle on 34th Street

Is Richard Attenborough the best on-screen portrayal of Santa Claus ever? Quite possibly… A man claiming to be Santa is taken to court, with no one believin’ in him apart from a little girl. A seriously feel-good film!

7. The Nightmare Before Christmas

We’re not even entertainin’ the notion that this is a Hallowe’en film! The Nightmare Before Christmas is a CHRISTMAS STORY about how Jack Skellington falls in love with CHRISTMAS and consequently nearly ruins CHRISTMAS for everyone. See? Definitely a Christmas movie.

6. A Muppet’s Christmas Carol

A twist on a timeless classic!  A Muppet’s Christmas Carol is a modern, upbeat, musical version of the classic tale of Ebenezer Scrooge being taught the meaning of Christmas. Fun for all the fam.

5. It’s a Wonderful Life

Although it was released in 1946 (!), this film is just as popular today as it was when it first came out. And no wonder – this movie is the definitive ‘feel good film’! When George Bailey hits some hard times, he considers the worst before an angel shows how important his life has been to others. This film is so good, we don’t even care that it’s in black ‘n white!

4. How the Grinch Stole Christmas

Dr Seuss’ unique Christmas tale takes to the big screen by none other than Jim Carrey as The Grinch. This movie is totally different to any other Christmas movie, given that the main character hates Christmas. But the film is hilarious, with a really heart-warming end to the tale.

3. Love Actually

Yeah its cheesy, but ya can’t help but love it. What makes Love Actually such a perfect Christmas film is that it covers so many different themes, with a total of ten different plots with different stories of Christmas-themed love. In fact, we could probably do another ranking of the storylines in Love Actually… watch this space!

2. Elf

“The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear!” This movie has everything – Christmas spirit, family drama, romance… and of course plenty of laughs. Brought up in the North Pole, Buddy the Elf never really ‘fit in’, so he embarks on a quest to find his real father in New York City. This is a heart-warming movie that will have you laughin’ out loud!

1. Home Alone

Comin’ in at Number 1, it has to be Home Alone. With its slapstick humour, iconic one liners coupled and perfect feeling of childhood Christmas spirit, there can be no argument that this is the best Christmas movie ever! Even though it came out nearly 30 years ago, it has stood the test of time and remains one of the most quotable films of all time. The upcoming Disney reboot has a lot to live up to!

So there ya have it – JD’s top Christmas movies. Would you have ranked ‘em differently? Let us know in the comments!

Until next time – Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.
