Whether your staying in with your BF/GF or having a chill night in, tonight’s the night for a Rom Com marathon. We’ve decided to limit this to films released after 2000, if we didn’t this could go on forever. Check out our pick’s below for your Valentine’s viewing pleasure!
Bridget Jones’ Diary (almost all of them) (2001)
Almost 20 years later and Bridget Jones’ Diary is still relevant
Love Actually (2003)
An iconic christmas film AND romcom showcasing the best of british humour and a classic Richard Curtis film, what more can we ask for. Surely it can be watched all year round yeah?
How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
Here we see two separate challenges set by two completely different people, who find themselves, unknowingly, testing such challenges out on each other. Matthew McConaughey’s character is trying to make a woman fall in love with him whilst Kate Hudson’s is showing how to lose a guy in 10 days for an article. Now what could possibly could wrong? 🤔
10 Things I Hate About You (1999) (special circumstances)
This one may technically not have been released in this century, however we felt it was an exception and deserved a place in our top 12. Because who doesn’t adore Heath Ledger singing Can’t Take My Eyes Off You across a sports field.
500 Days of Summer (2009)
Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are a duo we always needed and are really what makes this film the masterpiece it is. We find Gordon-Levitt’s character Tom reminiscing on the 500 days he spent with Summer, who he dreamed to spend the rest of his life with. Only for her to reveal she doesn’t believe in relationships, something we can all relate to in some way.
PS I love you (2007)
Get the tissues ready as this film gives all the emotions. Holly receives letters, from her husband following his death, that bring her inspiration, strength and power. Making her feel like he’s always there, through the highs and lows, giving her the strength she needs, even when he’s gone.
Kissing booth (2018)
A film you’d describe as so cheesy but so good! A Netflix classic about a girl and her best friends older brother and their forbidden ‘love’, we all love this modern classic, though we may not want to admit it!
To all the boys I Loved Before (2018)
Another great Netlfix RomCom, again focusing on the modern life of a teenage romance, highlighting the *real* struggles of love, like when your secret love letters get sent to all the boys you loved. A new sequel has just been released, let’s see if it lives up to the first!
Ladybird (2017)
Ladybird is a coming of age story about the struggles between mother and daughter. Christine/‘Ladybird’ is on a mission to get out of Sacramento and study in NYC, much to her mothers disapproval. Ladybird struggles through school and her relationships but ultimately achieves her goal of moving to New York, where she realises she and her mother are more alike than different. A Saoirse Ronan classic and definitely one for a girls night with the mother in your life.
Bridesmaids (2011)
A tail of exactly what the name states, bridesmaids and all the politics and emotion that come alongside the role. This is less about the relationship of a couple and more that of two friends, and how when you really care for someone, you can end up doing the craziest of things to prove it. A true Galentines movie!
