Today for International Women’s Day we’re highlighting some of the top Irish Sportswomen right now! From Boxing to Athletics, these irish sporting stars are at the top of there game, yet also here to bring us a lot more to be proud of! Here’s who we’re loving right now in the sporting world.
1. Katie Taylor – Boxing
Katie Taylor is a professional boxer and current undisputed lightweight champion! She is one of seven boxers in history to hold all 4 of the major world titles in boxing, WBA, WBC, TBF and WBO. Katie competed in the London 2012 Olympics for Ireland securing a gold medal in the lightweight division, before going professional under Matchroom Boxing in 2016. From a former football player to a professional boxer, Katie Taylor shows you can strive at anything you put your mind to!
2. Sanita Puspure – Rowing
Sanita Puspure is part of Irish rowing team, currently the reigning women’s single scull world champion since defending it at the World Championships in 2019. She competed for Ireland in the London 2012 Olympics and qualified for the 2016 Olympics. As well as being a 2 time Olympic, European and World Champion, Sanita is a mother of 2, showing us women can still achieve our goals along with a family!
3. Róisín Upton – Hockey
Róisín Upton is an international field hockey player, currently part of the Irish Women’s hockey team. She was part of the team during the Women’s Hockey World Cup in 2018 where the team won silver. The Irish Women’s Hockey Team have also qualified for Tokyo 2020 in which Róisín was part of their qualifying team. Although Róisín is an amazing player in her own right, the power of teamwork is really part of what makes her and the Irish Women’s Hockey team successful.
4. Denise O’Sullivan – Football
Denise O’Sullivan is an international footballer player who has been part of the Republic of Ireland Women’s National team since 2011. O’Sullivan currently plays for North Carolina Courage in the US and is on loan to the Western Sydney Wanderers in Australia. She has 76 appearances as a forward for the ROI team. Moving from team to team, O’Sullivan has kept to what she loved and showed football is for all!
5. Kate O’Connor – Athletics
Kate O’Connor is a multi-sport athlete for Ireland, primarily competing in the Heptathlon. She took 8th place in the 2018 Commonwealth finals and Silver in the European Athletics U20 Championships. This young sports star is just at the start of her game and we can be sure to see great things from Katie O’Connor in the future!
